Litter Updates from the Council

11th Dec 2009

Hello all,

Firstly I would happily like to report that the first fixed penalty notice that went out has been paid…so that is a result as I was dreading it just being ignored and then having to tackle the next steps.  So far so good.

This week there was a joint meeting with the University and several branches of the Council which was very helpful in pooling information and resources.  We were given a timeline of when students start/end/exam times and other punctuations throughout the year which may call for extended services (i.e. extra noise patrols at the time of finals, a bulky item collection scheme available to landlords at times when they are clearing out their properties for new arrivals).  We are working together to get some programs in place so that we can be more proactive than reactive.  The goal is to learn from past events and move forward so I am working on possible solutions for problem waste times and we will meet again soon to decide what action would be best suited/financially feasible.

This week there were bulky items collected from Errington Close/Dragon Road/Tiger Moth Way with litter picks carried out in Freemans Acre, Tiger Moth Way, The Runway and Cunningham Avenue.

There have also been potential resolutions of a couple of ongoing waste issues; the refuse in Errington Close is consistently being collected on the appropriate day since alternative arrangements for collection of the large wheelie bins has been arranged.  I have also been able to convince some landlords to provide hard bins for a couple of properties that were in dire need of them.

There were several final notices that went out this week and more knocking and educating going on.

All in all I think we are headed in the right direction and with joint planning going on in order to manage the low points of the year I am hoping we will continue in this direction.

Have a good weekend everyone

Kind regards

Another busy week in the fight against grime!

On Monday I attended Horsa Gardens and went through the pile of bags that had been put out at the end of last week and I was able to locate where the bags had come from and the first Fixed Penalty Notice was issued…monumental day! I also rebagged any split bags to ensure that it was all cleared on Wednesday. On Wednesday morning I went through and rebagged any split bags in the remaining roads as this is the best way to ensure that things get back to where they should be every week.

There were several final notices went out this week to properties across the development regarding storage and presentation and I will be monitoring and issuing FPNs if further evidence is found. There was also letters sent out to a few properties that had not put their refuse out to remind them to do so on the Tuesday evening and that if they miss the day to store it until the following week; in hopes that they didn’t realise that they missed it and immediately put it out. I had contacted the letting agent of no 15 Cunningham Ave last week and did notice an improvement to the state of it this week, as well as that they put their bin out to be emptied versus leaving it against the power station.

I had several bulky items/split bags cleared (Richards Street/Errington Close/Dragon Road/The Runway) and the majority of the roads and some of the rear courtyards on the development received a litter pick.

I followed up my previous contact with the letting agent of a block of flats along Mosquito Way to push for them to deal with their fly tipped bin store; I will continue to monitor this issue.
